Do american students need more time in school is an article both showing the pros and cons to each argument. The first article was pro for longer days at school. The title was more time more learning. The title alone explains the thought process of the author behind there reasoning for longer school days in the academic year. In Massachusetts some schools have adopted this option, whether it be longer school days or more school days in the academic year. Chris proposed that students who went to school longer would achieve and retain more information. The one school in particular went to school Monday through Friday. Monday through Thursday were 9 hours days and on Friday they got out of school early. What has happened is Monday through Thursday it would be a normal school day but the last hour of each of those days would contribute to the learning of the individuals weak points, whether it would be math, science, or language arts. Then Friday was a normal day at school. Some of his other examples were some schools extend the year into the summer for less time off on vacation. He also said that this was an impact especially in urban areas.
The second article was against lengthening school. Larry Cuban the author of The Perennial Reform:Fixing School Time had a different opinion on the matter. He proposed the making the school year longer would not be good for the parents and children. It would also raise the prices in school tuition. Meaning that school teachers would need annual raises for a longer period of time which could be very costly. And less time on vacation wil only make matters worse for individuals. He proposed that the only kids that may benefit from this is children who reside in urban areas where summer is not a factor to them.
